Contributors recipe – Quick and Easy Churmuri Snack

Churmuri is a puffed rice snack famous all over Karnataka and other parts of India. Among all street foods, it seems to be the quickest and the healthiest. And it is easy enough even for bachelors or amateur cooks like me can make it in a jiffy.

Usually there are made in under a few minutes and served in conical paper cup. There are two varieties, the crispy variety and a slightly wet variety. Both of them – with a mixture of tomatoes, chillies, onions and other veggies added in make for a quick bite for an evening snack.

There are different names to it like Murmura, Kurmura, Borugulu etc. Churmuri looks like a close relative of Bhel-Puri.

Nevertheless it’s easy as mixing a few ingredients in and turning a dull snack day into a fun filled one. Combine Churmuri with some south Indian tea, a few biscuits and it’ll last you while you enjoy a movie or catch a cricket match.

Churmuri / Kurmura Recipe

You’ll need:

2 onions
2 tomatoes
2 potatoes
2 cups rice flakes or kurmura{used for bhelpuri}
1/2 spoon green chilli paste
1/2 spoon garlic paste
1tbsp salt
1tbsp sugar.

Method:

Soak the rice flakes in water before the making of reciepe. Then add 1 spoon salt and a spoon of sugar in the soaked rice flakes.

Add tomatoes, potatoes (boiled, cooked and mashed) and onions into a bowl. Add chilli powder and add the soaked rice flakes. In a little oil fry jeera and cumin powder and throw it in the bowl mixture. Add a few drops of lemon for tangy taste and garnish with coriander. It’s ready and delicious to eat.

To make the Churmuri crispy rather than soft – fry the puffed rice in low flame in minimal or no oil to make it crisp. The add all the other ingredients.

Thanks for the recipe. I was in Mysore doing my engineering and we used to go everyday to the corner chaat guy. He used to make the best churmuris – that tangy taste along with tomatoes were just awesome.

while I’ve never tried potatoes in my churmuri…or garlic paste or anything along those line, i do add onions, coriander leaves, salted and fried peanuts, grated kachcha aam(when in season), tomatoes, salt, chilli powder and a dash of coconut oil…
and a certain churmuri and chaat stall outside St.aloysius college-mangalore called dammanna’s makes a delicious variety of churmuri called boiled churmuri where boiled egg is diced and mixed well with the spicy dish just to complement your palate
