Recipe Video: How to make Bengali Rosogolla

Rasgulla, Rosogolla or Roshgolla - whatever you call it, it certainly is among the top sweets in Indian cuisine. Originally thought to be from Bengal, Wikipedia tells me that it is Orissa actually.

I’m no expert in Indian food history, but I can sure eat a boxful of Rosogollas in one sitting! In Kolkata and other parts of Bengal, Haldiram’s, KC Das and other Sweet makers serve these sweets in a cay cup with lots of sugar juice.

In the following video, Manjula shows you the step by step guide to making Rosogollas at home. Enjoy this holiday weekend and welcome the New Year with this delicious dessert.

Note: The video is about 9 minutes long. It is recommended that you watch this video with a broadband internet connection.

Festival recipe Video: Rice Kheer (Payasam)

The fetive season is here and it will continue well until the next year. With all the Dusshera celebrations at home, I hadn’t posted in quite some time.

Keeping in mind the series of festivals that are going to come, I found Manjula’s video (courtesy: youtube.com) for making Rice Kheer or Payasam (as it is called down south India).

Payasams are a must in any Indian festival menu and with slight variations different varieties of Payasams can be made easily. This video for Rice Kheer gives you step by step instruction to make this sweet treat.

Note: Video is about 6 1/2 minutes long and will need some time to load, especially in slower internet connections. Video Courtesy - www.youtube.com and Manjula.

Cooking Video - How to make Roti (Indian Flat Bread)

It is estimated that among all Indian dishes, Roti ranks the highest - in terms of how many people eating it every day. Almost all of North India has to include Roti in some form as a staple food. Making a Roti is very easy (even for amateur cooks / bachelors / those new to Indian food).

The preparation of dough, I think, is the most important part to get that perfect Roti. Manjula in the following video explains and shows well how to make a Roti. You can check another variety of Roti being prepared by Manjula in this video for Naan bread and 2 videos for Chapathi here.

Also, check some Side-dishes for to go along: Side-dish Recipes, Curries and Gravies from the website and more Roti and Chapathi varieties from the main website.

Video: How to make Egg Fried Rice

It’s raining out here in Bangalore like no other and the weather is perfect to taste something hot. Well I have been scouring the Video sites for new recipes and I landed on this recipe for Egg Fried Rice. It’s pretty common here in India, to find Egg fried Rice, but the one in the video is nowhere near Indian.

Nevertheless, it’s different and looks so tempting. The videos from Videojug.com have been very professional - you are taken through a step-by-step preparation of a dish; in most cases a printed recipe accompanies the video. Many video websites can’t afford to do that, but it is nice to see a differently laid-out website. This recipe is made to look colorful by its use of carrots, onions and long-grained rice, which I think is Basmati rice.

Also, as you can expect (this not being an Indian dish), there is very little spiciness to it except for the use of pepper. Well you could add a touch of your own by adding some chilli powder for extra taste. I’ve tasted plain fried rice like this and I love it even though it might be bland for an Indian tongue. Vegetarians can always do without the eggs and go with a few more vegetables such as a couple of chopped chillies, boiled cauliflowers and maybe tomato sauce to go with that.
